Spring Star Party - 8pm (Rain / Cloudy-Sky Date)

GalileoAs announced in the newsletter and recent dinner meetings, the chapter Conservation Education Committee is hosting a Star Party this Thursday, April 27th, from 8pm on into the later evening. If Thursday is too cloudy, the ConEd committee is reserving Friday evening for a "rain" date.

The chapter is partnering with Poolesville High School to host an evening of stargazing and collegial instruction. Viewing will start after 8pm (once it's dark) and last until about 10pm, based on participation and demand.

Star Parties are informal events where astronomers / participants bring telescopes and binoculars and Constellationsspend some of the night observing objects such as planets, comets, stars, galaxies and other deep sky objects. Having your own telescope or binoculars is not required. Come out and look through other people's glass, ask questions, and get to better know the night sky.

The Poolesville astronomers will set up at the shotgun range starting around 6:30pm.

If the sky is too cloudy, we will postpone to Friday. We will send an email communication confirming either way.

MoCo Alliance - Spring Wildflower Walk (1pm)

SATURDAY, APRIL 29: 1-4PM

Spring Wildflower Walk with Carole Bergmann, Countywide M-NCPPC forest ecologist & field botanist

A Spring Wildflower hike in the Maryland Piedmont is a very special experience! Join us for a "botanical exploration" of the distinctive complex of habitats stewarded by the B-CC IWLA near Poolesville, MD.

We can expect to see a wide variety of wildflower species, including some very uncommon plants, as community types will range from upland woodlands, meadows and pond-edge assemblages, to include a unique "Triassic Red shale" habitat area. This notable shale barrens area supports a number of uncommon to rare native plants, and participants will see how vegetation in this small dry shale community differs greatly from the species we see in the moist, rich riparian buffer areas.

Carole will also point out birds, insects and amphibians along the way.

Expect to hike on natural surface trails, with some ups and downs. Wear suitable footwear, bring water.

Here is a printable brochure from the Montgomery Countryside Alliance

FrogWatch Training - 6pm

Did you know there are 14 species of frogs and toads in the DC-Metro Area and that each can be recognized by unique calls made during the spring and summer? Learn more about your amphibian neighbors and contribute to their conservation by participating in DOEE FrogWatch at the Conservation Farm and in your own backyard!

DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Fish and Wildlife Biologist Rachel Gauza will be leading a DOEE FrogWatch training at the Chapter House on Tuesday, May 2nd from 6:00 – 8:30 PM. This classroom- and activity-based training will help prospective volunteers learn how to recognize individual species by call and will provide instruction on how to collect and submit data from local wetlands and streams. Those who are interested can join Ms. Gauza at the Small Pond immediately following the training where we will log the first monitoring observation as a group. Please dress in field attire and bring a flash light or head lamp if you plan to visit the pond following the indoor portion.

The workshop is free but space is limited and registration is required. Participants aged 10 and up are welcomed; minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian . Please email Brett Davis at bdbrettdavis@gmail.com with the name(s) of participants to reserve your spot for this unique opportunity.

This initial notification is going out to Pond and Stream committee members but please feel free to share with others that may have interest.

Chapter House Clean-Up @ 9:00am

This Sunday, September 17th at 9am, the chapterhouse will get its monthly cleaning & dusting Sweep Broomjust in time for the following  Wednesday's dinner meeting. Those who want to help the chapter put on its freshest face for the next month, especially those who need work hours, have a golden opportunity just a few days away.

Bring your "favorite" cleaning gloves and comfortable clothes for some mopping, dusting, cleaning, & dusting.

This time of year, it's especially important to get the inside of the chapter looking sparkly, as we all socialize more inside in the cold weather.

One of the chapter's senior members will be there to unlock the front gate & open the chapterhouse Cleaning suppliesfor prospective members who don't have their own access yet.

Customarily, members who stay for the entire cleanup get a full three hours toward their annual work requirement.

Tasks generally include:
- Cleaning both bathrooms top-to-bottom
- Wiping down surfaces in chapter kitchen & member kitchen
- Cleaning all kitchen sinks & sink trap
- Cleaning & organizing bar sink, bar top,  & bar area
- Mopping kitchens, bar, bathrooms, entry and in front of bar
- Dust-mopping chapterhouse floor & BOG room
- Dusting window frame, mantels, and BOG room
- Cleaning chapterhouse windows inside & out
- Polishing the BOG room floor
- In cold weather, we clean the ashes/debris from the fireplaces
- In warm weather, we also attack the chairs, tables, & concrete on the porches
Window Cleaning
Don't let this list daunt you !!!! With a good crew, we have finished this list well before noon.

We hope to see you there @ 9am!
(There is usually a pot of hot coffee by 9:15 ...)
