Wildlife Counts

Mission statement: “Wildlife Counts,” a program of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase (BCC) chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA), is a Citizen Scientist project to inventory and monitor the wildlife of the chapter property and its environs.  BCC-IWLA members will submit their observations to the “Wildlife Counts” website, and these records will be confirmed, recorded and archived in the program database.  The data and reports resulting from “Wildlife Counts” will:

  • Help our members meet their IWLA pledge by providing them with opportunities to better “...know the beauty of nature, and increasing their understanding of nature and the value of wildlife, woodlands and open space”*,
  • Educate and engage our members and neighbors by involving them in observing and appreciating the local wildlife and wild areas,
  • Provide reliable and sound stewardship and management advice to other BCC-IWLA committees,
  • Document the unique ecology of the fauna and flora that reside in of one of Montgomery County’s last wild places, and
  • Inform future development decisions.
